Casa Dorita y Teodoro
My review: If you want to experience real Cuba this is it. A lot of the "host families" around Havana, are not really anything else than a host house. Thats why I loved living here. The family really welcome you like a part of the family and that's definitively the best way to experience Cuba by heart. Havana has tons of nice places to stay and polite people wanting to help you everywhere. But the only thing you really learn by this is seeing the difference between how rich Europeans live and desperate Cubans suck up to you only to ask for money so they could maybe afford a hint of that kind of life. This family, on the other hand, were the only ones I felt showed me how it really is to live in Cuba, and that is exactly what I wanted to get out of the stay. No lies, and no trying to make Cuba seem more luxuries than it is, but real generousness and interest in me and my life, which also gave a great opportunity to practice my Spanish.
The house has everything you need and is great situated near the university and several hotels with a pool you can pay for. The food was very good for Cuban cooking, and as you really feel like they actually care for you, their happy to help you with anything you need.

Casa Dorita y Teodoro
My review: The owners are a super warm family. They treated me like family, all the way from the big hug when they picked me up at the airport, to staying up late worrying for me when I went out late at night, to making sure that my favorite food was on the table or waiting for me in the fridge if I couldn't be there on time for the meal.
Accommodations are minimal, but you really get the authentic feel of cuban life, living with a family of five (grandma included) that struggles with making ends meet. If you are looking for luxurious accomodations - this is NOT it. If you are looking for relationships and for culture, stay here!!!
Casa is at the second floor. I rented one bedroom with attached private bath. I saw the other room which is much larger and has a nice private bathroom and its own kitchen, which is nice to have, but not a necessity, because I was comfortable using the family's kitchen.
The casa is walking distance to hotel habana libre where you can access the internet 8am-8pm. You can catch at the street a local taxi for 8pesos (local, not cuc) - about $.25 to get to havana vieja - it takes only about 10-15min. The university of havana is walking distance - only two blocks away. So the location is very good.
Their friendly twenty years old son, Mario, will happily take you out to taste the good havana life. Grandma Abuela checks on everyone, making sure all is well:) great conversation with the parents Dorita & Dorito and the teen daughter, Melisa. Really good people. You won't regret staying with them!
