Casa Dorita y Teodoro
My review: I first stayed at Casa Dorita y Teodoro for four months in 2013, whilst studying a Spanish course at the University of Havana. I’ve since returned to Havana several times and always stay with them.
Dorita and Teodoro came to meet me at the airport when I first arrived in Cuba. They were immediately really kind and welcoming, making me feel at home in Havana. They really welcome you as a part of their family, along with their children Mario (23), Melissa (16) and la abuela (Dorita’s mum).
Dorita’s food is excellent, she cooks traditional Cuban food and you can arrange to have breakfast or dinner at the time you want, often being able to eat with the family (if that’s what you want to do).
I’ve stayed in both rooms in the casa.
One has a double bed and a private bathroom, with a shower. The room is simple, but has everything you need. There is air-conditioning, a fridge and a television.
The other bedroom is bigger; it currently has a double bed in it and a single bed. Attached there is a small kitchenette, with a fridge, a sink, a table and chairs. The family are planning to install a cooker in there, so guests can cook for themselves, if they want. There is also a private bathroom, with a shower, attached to this bedroom.
The casa is less than a 5 minute walk to the university, so it’s really well located for studying there. It’s also walking distance to the Habana Libre (for internet), Calle 23, Vedado and the sights in Centro Habana. It’s easy to catch an almendron from the next street, San Lazaro, to get to Habana Vieja.
I would highly recommend Dorita and Teodoro’s casa, especially if you a want to experience ‘real’ or normal life in Havana. The family are genuinely kind and caring and share what it’s like to live in Cuba today.
How was the food they offer?: The food was great, typical Cuban food. Lots of fruit at breakfast, fresh fruit juice, coffee, eggs and toast. At dinner there is always salad, rice and beans, or congri (which is really tasty) and some kind of meat or fish, depending on what is available.
Other services they offer: The family has a car, so they can pick you up from the airport for an additional cost (normally 25 CUC).
