A fantastic piece of paradise to rest and unload. The apartment is small, cozy and equipped with absolutely everything you might need. The terrace made us want to not leave the apartment at all during the day and just spend it swinging in the hammock, soaking in the sun and reading a book. Marga and Bernardo made us feel very welcome, they helped us organize cars, bicycles and their breakfast was just perfect to start off the day!
How was your room?: The room(s) was wonderful: clean, spacious and equipped with everything you might need
How was the food they offer?: The breakfast was huge and very tasty.

How was your room?: Het gaat om een appartementje (slaapkamer/woonkamer/keuken/balkon). Heel knus en gezellig. Bed was goed, waterdruk was ook prima.
How was the food they offer?: Ontbijtjes waren echt lekker!
Other services they offer: Taxi's, reserveringen voor restaurants e.d.

How did you make the reservation: The casa directly
Casa El Tulipan was our favourite place to stay in Cuba! From the moment we arrived Mara and Bernardo were extremely welcoming and made us feel at home. The casa is on one of the main roads in Trinidad and is around 5 to 10 minutes walk from the towns main square. You'll also find plenty of bars and places to eat nearby the casa. The room itself is ideal, it's actually the whole upper floor of the casa including bedroom, bathroom, lounge/kitchen and a beautiful terrace (complete with hammock!). The fridge was fully stocked when we arrived with water, soft drinks, beers and wine which you're welcome to use and pay for on check out. The rooms are cleaned daily and were always immaculate. As well as making us a delicious vegetarian breakfast every morning Mara and Bernardo helped us arrange taxis to and from Havana, book restaurants and gave us lots and tips and advice about how to get the most of the time we had in Trinidad. After a long trip from Scotland to Cuba, then from Havana to Trinidad, arriving at El Tulipan was the perfect start to our holiday. Muchas gracias Mara and Bernado

Marga and Bernardo were the most fantastic hosts - lovely, warm, funny, inviting and made a real effort to make us feel comfortable straight away and tell us all the important information we needed to know about the area. Marga also provided a great book full of local and useful information including Spanish phases and restaurant and activity recommendations. The casa was absolutely beautiful with its own large private terrace with hammock. The breakfast was also the best we had throughout our whole Cuba trip. Great experience!
How was your room?:Very large comfortable room that was very clean
How was the food they offer?:Excellent! Best breakfast we had our whole Cuba trip

My review about the casa: |
We stayed at Casa El Tulipan in Novemeber 2016. Review I wrote got deleted so now 8 months later a new try…
Marga and Bernado were the best hosts possible; happy, kind, helpful, service minded and full of local advice and tips. We communicated in English with Marga and a little Spanish with Bernado. We felt so welcomed by Marga and Bernado and appreciate all the guidance and hospitality they provided.
They ordered us a Bici-Taxi to transport us from the bus station to the casa. Quite an experience on the cobble stoned streets. Very glad preordered as there is waiting a crowd who will try to take you to their casa on their bike. Quite overwhelming really.
The upstairs apartment was perfect for our stay; very spacious and clean with bedroom, bathroom, living area, kitchen and a lovely large terrace. The roof top terrace was super to relax on, eat breakfast and very private. Bernado served us a lovely filling breakfast every day.
Casa El Tulipan is very central, perfectly located just a stones-throw away from Trinidad centre.
After touring the old town we walked to the Playa Ancon beach(Super Beach) one day via La Boca(not so nice place). Was a very long walk and would only recommend as a walk/jog for those who have time and are fit. But it was an interesting walk and a good way to see the area. Hiked a taxi the next day. Not recommended to pick a taxi up like this. Follow Marga and Bernados advice, they know best ! Took a tiny catamaran trip out to the barrier and snorkeled for 1.5 hrs. Great experience and lots to see when snorkeling. (Take your own equipment, snorkel and flippers, as those there not good !) Only 10CUC per person and we had the sea to ourselves. Was a lovely private trip with my husband, myself and the “captain” (not room enough for more). I would highly recommend this in comparison to the large catamaran trips that are very expensive. On the beach we bought fresh coconut that cannot compare to anything you buy in Europe. Can also get snacks and food at the hotel and beach hut.
We will always remember the local restaurant, “Sol y Son” we were recommended by Marga and Bernado and the delicious, huge lobsters we received there. Thanks for that recommendation !! This restaurant was truly beautiful, good service and good food. Eating out and all the music was a lovely experience and the beaches were lovely. On our final day in Cuba, Marga and Bernado ordered a taxi early in the morning to take us to Havana. We arrived safely and in good time, in a more or less modern car. A historic day as Fidel Castro died this very morning.
I would highly recommend this casa if you are thinking of visiting Trinidad. Location was great, hosts were the best, apartment was perfect and breakfasts could not be better. |

My review about the casa: |
Casa el Tulipan is exactly what you need when you're in a foreign country, and this is for many reasons.
The first of which is that it is almost like a home away from your own. Mara and Bernardo rent a lovely independent apartment above their own lovely home in Trinidad. They really have thought of everything that you could need to feel comfortable and at home. Small things like teas, coffee, a fridge with water and drinks, a stunning sunny balcony where you can swing in the hammock and listen to the streets below... their apartment is divided into a bedroom, bathroom, small living area with a couch and tv and also a kitchen area. My favourite part of the living space was the handmade scrapbook that they had made, detailing all the various spots and restaurants you should try out, their recommendations for day trips and pictures and comments from their previous guests who have stayed. Simple things like that and the library of books in various languages, make the house feel very comfortable and cosy.
Mara and Bernardo themselves are just the definition of friendly and helpful. They are literally willing to help you with anything you need - booking a day trip, organising transport, recommending somewhere to eat, or just to have a chat and learn about Cuba and how they came to meet and live where they are.
The Casa is located extremely close to the centre, with everything including the bus depot in walking distance.
Breakfast was yummy! And probably the nicest I had during my travels of Cuba. Fresh bread, cheese, ham, fruits, juice, coffee, eggs and tomato was served to us each morning to start our day.
I cannot recommend this Casa enough! If you do not stay here while in Trinidad - you have wasted your trip! |
How was your room?: |
The room was cosy, with a double bed, lots of space to hang clothes and bags. Two bedside lockers and air conditioned.
The kitchen had all the requirements for you wanted to buy some food and cook a dinner or lunch, rather than eat out. And the fridge was stocked with bottled water, beers and drinks.
The sitting/ living area had a t.v which you could use a USB with if you have brought movies. It also had a couch, which turned into a second bed and a library of books in various languages. |
How was the food they offer?: |
Breakfast was fabulous! They asked what time we would like breakfast every morning, and it was served on the sunny terrace.
Every morning we had eggs, cheese, ham, fruits, juice, coffee, and tomatoes with fresh bread. |
Other services they offer: |
Booking day trips and excursions. |

My review about the casa: |
Sometimes you stay somewhere that is more than a place to stay...
From the moment we pulled up in our taxi at the doorstep of El Tulipan and met the effervescent Marga, to the minute we waved goodbye to Marga and Bernardo through the back window of our cab, our 7-day trip to Trinidad was made so special by these wonderful and energetic hosts who just don't stop smiling!!!
They helped us slot right in! And for 1 week we didn't just visit Trinidad, Cuba; we lived there! It's a crazy life in Trinidad, Cuba! There's a cockrel, there's a man with a dawnbreak breadvan, there are horses and carriages and salsa 7 days a week.
Early morning breakfasts on the terrace: if you're not already up then Bernardo calling out your name as he comes up the winding staircase with the trays of delicious breakfast (Gouda cheese, tomato salad to die for, omelette or eggs, sweet cakes, etc, etc)...the sounds of Trinidad beginning to buzz around you as the town awakes.
You want bikes to ride down the coast - done! You want salsa lessons - done! Horseriding - same story!
Nothing is a problem for this pair; they are born to host.
The apartement is cool and clean and there's always cold cold water in the fridge.
P.S! The aircon is one of the best we have encountered.
UNFORGETTABLE. |

My review about the casa: |
We had a wonderful, 3 night stay at Casa El Tulipan. Hosts Mara and Bernardo were very friendly and couldn't have being more welcoming, and Mara speaks fluent English, so communication was never an issue. During our stay they provided us with tips and recommendations for our time in Trinidad, and they arranged bike hire and made restaurant reservations for us.
The self contained accomodation (bedroom, bathroom, separate living area and kitchenette) was spacious and comfortable, nicely furnished and well equipped. The private terrace was the perfect spot for enjoying Mara's amazing breakfast (her homemade flan cake was particularly good), and it was also lovely for relaxing in the afternoon sun, or sipping cocktails in the evening.
The casa is a short walk from Plaza Mayor and the sights of the town centre. It a little noisy at night and early in the morning (traffic, cockerels crowing, dogs barking) but we found this to be pretty normal in Cuba, and with ear plugs it wasn't a problem.
I'd highly recommend El Tulipan to anyone looking to stay in Trinidad. |

This review is about Spanish lessons with Prof. Carmen. I did not stay at Casa El Tulipan. The Casa helped me to arrange lessons (3 hours per day for 8 CUC per hour)
Casa El Tulipan - Spanish lessons Profesor Carmen
My review: Please note: I did not stay in Casa El Tulipan--they were booked. My review is to thank Casa El Tulipan for putting me in touch with Profesora Carment for Spanish lessons.
SPANISH LESSONS arranged through Casa with Profesora Carmen (see comments below)
Other comments: From January 6, 2017-January 20, 2017, I studied for 3 hours a day (8 CUC per hour) with Profesora Carmen of the Universidad of Trinidad. I loved every minute of it! Carmen speaks a very clear Spanish, which was helpful for me, because my Spanish is not fluent. My Spanish improved most in speaking, pronunciation and grammer, but most and best of all, SPANISH LESSONS with ProfesoraCarmen. Carmen was an amazing teacher of cultural studies of Cuba. She is energetic, diligent, flexible and fun. Who could ask for anything more? Our lessons were varied: I read a scholarly essay on the ethnography of the little black birds (negritos) you will see in cages all over the streets of Trinidad; we walked through "New Trinidad" for an urban tour of recent growth in the town; we visited the wonderful Municipal Historical Museum and her husband, Hector, a historian, offered a thorough tour. Carmen, Hector and I spent a long morning visiting the archaeological sites of colonial haciendas and their sugar-cane processing and distilleries now being refurbished in the valley behind Trinidad. Studying with Carmen was the greatest gift and I plan to return for more Spanish lessons next year. This is high praise, because I have studied Spanish in a university setting (USA), in language school in Cuenca, Ecuador, in private lessons in Vilcabamba, Ecuador. Carmen is truly a gifted teacher. Thank you Carmen and thank you Casa El Tulipan for putting me in touch with Carmen. Hasta luego!

My review: I cannot say enough good things about our stay with Marga and Bernardo in Trinidad. Be sure to ask them about their lives and how they met - it's an amazing love story fit for the movies!
We ran into a pickle by not planning well with bringing enough USD, and they really saved our butts. The only way to get USD in Cuba is through Western Union, BUT you have to it sent to a Cuban person who can pick it up for you. Bernardo was our guy, and he patiently came with us to help get our money.
How was your room?: Our terrace was spectacular - the breakfast was one of my favorite parts of the experience, plus lying in the hammock at night drinking mojitos. They also kindly made a dinner reservation for us at El Sol when I had trouble getting in touch with the restaurant from the US. I would recommend staying with them to anyone who visits Trinidad.
How was the food they offer?: Lovely breakfast. Fresh fruit (papaya, pineapple, banana), eggs, cheese, ham, and poundcake plus coffee and tea
Other services they offer: Making reservations
