Casa Niorlan y Kenia
My review: This was our 11th time in Varadero in 15 years and have stayed in all inclusive's to family homes. This time, we stayed at this casa a total of 12 nights. The location was beautiful, right on the beach. Kenia and Niorlan were gracious hosts and assisted us in finding taxi service to visit Cuban friends in various cities. I would have given this casa a higher rating except for the following reasons:
One caution, not having to do with the casa. We found many places that charged more for food, water, pop if you looked like a tourist. One placed, when I showed up in jeans speaking fluent Spanish, charged me 2.83 for an ice cream. Coming home from dinner, dressed up with my wife speaking only English, they wanted 14.00 for it. Other places charged the same no matter what and we found/frequented those stores.
How was your room?: The rooms were nice and clean on arrival. Lounge chairs were supplied to read and relax on the patio. unfortunately, the rooms weren't kept clean. Although the rooms were clean when we arrived, they were not cleaned in the 2 weeks we stayed nor were cleaning equipment available to use (like a broom to sweep the sand). The same for linens. We used the same sheets and towels the entire time.
How was the food they offer?: We only ate a breakfast once and it was OK, nothing special. We heard that others ate lunch's and dinners and enjoyed them.
Other services they offer: This is where the lower rating comes in (could be a 4-5 with changes).
- Advertised A/C but it worked sporadically. If used "too much" it would have the circuit turned off by the casa owners
- Advertised TV but only got a few blurry channels in Spanish.
- Advertised 24 hour water but after 8-9 pm, it would be a trickle only and made showers impossible and flushing toilets a long process. In all honesty, this may be a result of the municipal water restrictions but sometimes was due to the water being shut off by owners. We would ask why there was no water and he would say "the State turned off the supply" but then would see him secretly reach behind a table and turn it on.
Other comments: All in all, I enjoyed our stay. With a few improvements (especially room cleaning, even every 2-3 days, reliable water and giving what they advertise honestly) this will eventually be a nice place to stay.

Casa Kenia Varadero
My review: this casa was not as seen on pictures when we arrived. we could not stay as one of the room was so small for 2 people. Now the web side (holacuba.de) removed one of the rooms and refused to return my deposit because they said I should have called them to Dominican Republic to get a replacement. Ridiculous...So unprofessional and a real rip-off.
Richard the Agent is a story teller, he said that rooms in Caribbean don't usually have windows because of the heat... hilarious...
How was your room?: not suitable for renting

How was your room?: We had a beautiful large room with a fridge, TV, air conditioning, an extra bed and a private bathroom. Everything was very clean. The best shower we had during our 3 week stay in Cuba :-)
How was the food they offer?: We enjoyed breakfast every morning which was very tasty. The highlight of our last night was our candlelight dinner. We carried the table to the beach and Niorlan and Kenya served us a super delicious dinner. This moment we will always keep in memory.
Other comments: Unfortunately, our Spanish was not so good, so we talked mostly in English with Niorlan. We felt very comfortable with the family. They have a very sweet dog. She called Nikki.

Casa Kenia
My review: Thanks for our new friend pototo we had a great stay at one of the best beaches in cuba.
casa kenia might not look like much from the road as it is set back a good 100 meters, this is a good thing. there are no buildings or development behind the house to the beach, about another 100 meters away.
while kenia spoke only spanish, niorlan practiced his english with us as we attempted our bad spanglish. the house is a warren of outside hallways with a nice dining patio out. the rooms had airconditioning, tv's (not usually found in casa particulars) modern bathrooms and hot showers. on our final night they made a fantastic ten dollar lobster dinner for us. priceways casa kenia is the other end of veradero acommodations from the all inclusive hotels. while being in town
the slightly setback location made it the perfect place to stay.
be sure and visit the Beatles barestaraunt and the park josone, both within a few hundred meters.
ps- they have the coolest dog in the world- NIKKI.
