San Lazaro 119, Centro Havana
My review: Very friendly and welcoming hosts. Gave us plenty of good advice for where to go and what to see/explore. Even phoned and arranged salsa-lessons for us while in town.
Great breakfast with good coffe and loads of fresh fruit.
Good spot for staying while exploring Havana by foot. Close to Malecon and the Museum of Revolution. We also walked from the house to Hotel National.
Nice rooms. Great showers!
We vere 2 families with 8 persons travelling together and Gemma and her husband managed to make room for us all. We'd love to stay here next time in Havana!
How was your room?: Nice, clean, good place to rest and get sleep.
How was the food they offer?: Great breakfast!
Other comments: We'd love to stay here next time in Havana!

Casa 119 SAN LAZARO
My review: We spent 5 nights at Gemma's and Walbis' apartments at the end of January.
The location of the apartments is just great, very close to the Malecon in Habana Centro, 10-15 min walk to Habana Vieja, 25-30 min from Vedado (short 5 min drive).
Both apartments have their own private entrance and are located on the first floor of a block of flats. One has a double room while the bigger apartment has two double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms. They are both nicely decorated and are very spacious. They are also clean and tidy. The bathrooms in the bigger appartment had just been renovated - it was one of the best bathrooms that we had during our trip around Cuba while staying in different casas particulares. The bigger apartment felt a bit quieter than the smaller one. The beds in both apartments were very comfortable.
In addition to the above, what really makes this place exceptional is the kindness of its hosts. Gemma and Walbis are just so nice! They are a young couple so spend some time talking to them when you arrive if you are looking for useful tips about Habana - what you should do and avoid, recommended places to eat out and go out, how much to pay for taxis, etc.). They were extremely helpful all the time e.g. helped us find some place to stay in one of the other smaller cities we were visiting; arrange transport,... Also, we arranged for them to pick us up from the airport as we were arriving quite late in the evening. Walbis speaks fluent English and I Gemma is learning. They are also gay-friendly.
Gemma's breakfasts were just delicious. Each breakfast was slightly different each day which was much appreciated. Definitely worth the money.
Unfortunately we were quite unwell during our stay for 2 days, we believe this was due to some drinks we had in a bar. During this time, Gemma looked after us like we were family and prepared for us teas and milder meals until we felt better. I cannot thank her enough for caring for us like that during our stay.
I'd strongly recommend this place and meeting this amazing couple if you are planning to spend some days in Habana.

Casa 119 San Lazaro
My review: This was the first Casa that I stayed at while in Cuba and, although I stayed in a lot of other wonderful Casas, nothing could match my experience at 119 San Lazero with Gemma and Walbis.
I made my booking before arriving in Cuba via email - Gemma and Walbis were immediately responsive (within 24 hours) and were even able to arrange an airport pickup for myself and my Dad (25 CUCs). We exchanged pictures to make it easier to find each other at the airport. Given my limited Spanish as well as our minimal knowledge of Cuba/ Havana, it was such a relief to see 2 friendly faces at the airport arrival terminal. On the way to the Casa, Walbis explained the sites we were passing by and gave us helpful hints to remember where we were staying. Gemma didn't stop smiling the whole time we stayed with them and made a great effort to practice her English skills. Simply put: they are a happy pair of wonderful people!
The outside of the building was a little sketchy at first glance but, of course, this is Cuba. The inside of the casa was small but comfortable and beautifully decorated - They have clearly taken a lot of time and energy to make it look and feel like home-away-from-home. They provided us with an extra bed at no extra cost. The Casa is conveniently located only 1 block from the Malecon (1 block from the guidebook-worthy Palador: Castropol) and 2 blocks from Prado and the start of "Old Havana."
Gemma made breakfast for us every morning (5 CUCs each) and it was such a delicious feast that we didn't need to eat lunch. She is a seriously amazing cook and hostess - I am especially fond of her freshly-squeezed fruit juices and fun towel animals.
Above all, what really makes this Casa a "must" is the warmth and attention offered by Gemma and Walbis. They were excited to talk to us about their Casa, to offer advise about things to see and do in Cuba, and insight about life in Havana, and we genuinely felt welcome. As a final illustration of how wonderful they are: we stayed at this Casa on my birthday and they were thoughtful enough to give me a small gift.
When I come back to Cuba, I will be certain to stay here again. Thank you Gemma and Walbis - You were incredible!
How was your room?: It was great - The bed was comfortable, the air conditioning worked well, and the safe was a nice touch.
How was the food they offer?: Delicious! We only ate breakfast with them but I would imagine that all the other food options would be wonderful as well.
Other services they offer: Airport Pickup (25 CUCs).
Other comments: Stay here! You won't regret it!

CASA 119 SAN LAZARO
My review: This place is an oasis is in the best neighborhood of Havana. My boyfriend and I were so incredibly happy with this casa particular that we returned to stay here in the middle of our trip and again at the end. The owners, Walvis and Gemma, really did everything to make our stay comfortable. They are wonderful people. We feel lucky to have met them!
The casa particular is its own separate apartment complete with a full kitchen. The AC in the bedroom is the best AC we had during our whole time in Cuba- kept the room super cool and was very quiet. Gemma changed our towels and sheets, cleaned each day and left us little bottles of soap and shampoo. We felt like we were at a resort! When we told her we had bought beans, she even lent us her pressure cooker! The fridge is stocked with beer and water which is for sale at a very reasonable price.
The location of this casa is perfect. Right next to the Malecón and walking distance to Havana Vieja. We also enjoyed going to some of the little fruit shops and cafeterías in the neighborhood.
Thank you Gemma and Walvis for making our stay in Havana so comfortable and memorable!
How was your room?: The bedroom is super clean (as is the whole house). Pretty big and has nice furniture for setting your bag and organizing your clothes if you wish. The AC is the star of the bedroom- powerful and quiet it keeps the room very fresh.
How was the food they offer?: The menu from Gemma is well worth a try- she is an amazing Cuba cook!

Casa 119 San Lazaro
How was your room?: Comoda, sabanas y toallas limpias. La habitación tiene tele y aire acondicionado. Ideal para descansar.
How was the food they offer?: Desayunamos en la casa, muy buena presentación y riquisimo. Nos habia quedado comida para la cena y Gemma nos calentó la comida y preparo un arroz para acompañar. Impecable!!

My review: I stayed 3 nights at this casa in Havana. The place was very clean and really nice. The owners are a beautiful couple who speak English and will give you advice/tips about Havana, much needed for a first timer visiting Cuba. Thank you Gemma! It was a pleasure staying with you guys.
How was your room?: Comfortable, clean and private. They change your sheets and towels everyday.
How was the food they offer?: I only had breakfast one day, as I like to experience the city, but it was delicious, with fresh food and lovely Cuban coffee among other things.
Other services they offer: They will advice you and get you pretty much anything you need while in Havana. You need a taxi, a reservation in a restaurant, Gemma is there to make it happen. I am very grateful to this family for going the extra mile to make me feel at home. |
