Casa Frank y Evelin
Address: Pio Rosado No 353 1/2
e/ San Francisco y San Germán
Santiago de Cuba
Tel: +53 22 653740

Cheap calls to Cuba

Name: Brenda Casey
Country: Canada
I stayed there at (date): May 2008 and May 2009 (5+ weeks in total)

FRANK & EVELIN run a welcoming, hug-ridden, spotless household that offers 2 rooms with private modern baths, air conditioning, tv, personal locked safe, wall fans, and delicious food made with love and pride.  In the centre of town, it is walking distance to artisans, shops, Casa de la Musica, Casa de la Trova, museums, markets, and in the heart of daily Cuban life, close to parks and prominades.  The terrace (at the top of 3 stories) is a tranquil hideaway and meals are brought to you with care and smiles. They have 4 beautiful children (2 girls, 2 boys) who are equally helpful, delightful and affectionate...demonstrating old fashioned courtesy, fun and respect.  Learn to play dominoes or get a massage (Frank is a certified massage therapist) or watch life on the street.  You feel part of the family from the moment you enter, with none of the hassle, all of the privacy and only positive attention.

Casa style: Fantastic hosts, Charming, Safe
Amenities: Parking service, TV, In room safety box, Airconditioning, Private bathroom, Laundry service, Balcony, Ceiling fan
How was your room?: Clean, spacious, quiet, secure, the room was set up well with sufficient space for clothing and suitcases.  I am a person in a wheelchair and, with some ingenuity and assistance from the family, the room is manageable as is the bathroom.  Bars were installed in the shower, near the toilet and on the wall, to help me maneuver there.
How was the food the offer?:Outstanding food -- always fresh, much variety despite limited market availability.  Tasty and lovingly prepared, Evelin cooks to the preferences of her guests.  I do not like salt, do not eat red meat, and love vegetables.  I don't think I had the same dinner twice in a month's stay!  Breakfast can be various fruits, eggs, bread and juices, in whatever varieties and amounts Evelin can manage.
Other services they offer: Frank is a certified massage therapist.  He is gentle, respectful and caring.  His English is adequate, but his daughter, Angela, is fluent.  Laundry is done daily and prices are dependent on garment.  They play a fun-filled game of dominoes (in the Santiago style) and teach in a humourous, good-natured way.  Should you require assistance, medical attention or information, someone in the household will find the help you need.
Other comments: This family embraces you as one of their own while showing you essential Cuban daily life.  Their family and friends drop by -- and you are invited.  There is never any pressure to participate, but always a feeling of being welcomed should you wish to join in.  The children are warm and friendly, bright and sensitive.

The casa has already been recomended, by Pavel and Lucie, from Czech Republic : I'd like to add the pictures of the casa, which, as Pavel and Lucie said, is very well-located and very nice. The food Mabel cooks is really really good (my husband says it is as good as his mother's...)

This casa particular is by far the nicest house around the center of Santiago. It is really great, very centered (ca 200m from Parque Cespedes), with independent entrance, very private and with a terrace. There is only one room and it has private bath, air-conditioning and fridge. The owners are very nice and Mabel is a great cook. We were stuck there for 4 days due to the hurricane and it was a very pleasant stay.

A really great house in Santiago is La Casona de San Jerónimo. It is centrally located, three blocks from the Plaza Dolores. There are two rooms, each with private bath, fan, air-conditioner, and refrigerator. One of the rooms has an independent entrance. Asela, the owner, is educated, gracious, and extremely helpful. She charges for the room and for breakfast.

Casa Morayma Olivares Cala y Raul Sarmiento Concepcion
Address: Calle Corona No.373
e/ San Germán y Trinidad
Santiago de Cuba

Cheap calls to Cuba

The house I stayed in was actually that of the brother of the casa reserved. So this was the house of Morayma Olivares Cala y Raul Sarmiento Concepcion (calle Corona No.373, entre San Germán y Trinidad, tel 22 623979). The owners are a very nice retired couple. Rate was 25 CUC per night, and we arranged meals as well @ 7 CUC dinner and 3 CUC breakfast. They were extremely patient with my Spanish which needs much practice, and helpful in providing advice to see and experience the city. The house was very comfortable, the meals the best I've had in Cuba. Room had air conditioning and a private washroom. Could not ask for more.
