Recommendations:

I stayed at Rancho Florida for three nights in May, 2005 and had a wonderful time.

The casa is run by Eloy and his wife Sonia, with help from their daughters Nelly and Anna.

For a very low price you get what feels like your own private ocean-front cottage in the back of the house. There are two adjoining rooms sitting off of a beautiful back porch overlooking the sea and the Escambray mountains. A spectacular sunset every night is pretty much guaranteed. You are also invited into the rest of the house to watch television or just to visit.

Swimming in the Caribbean Sea right outside your back porch is amazing.

The meals were delicious and elegantly presented, but they were far more than I could possibly eat in a sitting … Nelly teased me for eating "like a little baby". Sonia will keep your own fridge stocked with water, beer or whatever you need.

Trinidad and Ancon Beach are both a short 10 minute cab ride away. If you are a bit more adventurous, Eloy can hustle up a couple of bicycles for you to peddle to Ancon. By the way, there is great snorkeling just off the public beach beside Hotel Costa Sur, about a 20 minute bike ride from the casa. There is secure parking next to Eloy's '52 Dodge if you've rented a car.

This is a great place to stay to explore Sancti Spiritus Province or just to kick back on the Caribbean.

A small memory of the kindness and attention of the hosts:

When I left the casa in La Boca, I took a taxi at about 6:45 in the morning to make sure I could get on the 8:00 Viazul bus to Havana. While I was waiting at the station, Eloy pulled up in his old Dodge. He had driven into town to bring me a small notepad and some batteries that I had forgotten in the casa. This is Cuba at its best.
