Jazz Café

This is Chuchó Valdés' turf. His group Irakere and other famous Cuban jazz bands often play here in two sets starting at 8pm and 11pm. Afterwards the place turns into a lively disco. The atmosphere is mellow and sophisticated. The café also operates as a restaurant, so come early to nab a good table.

Footprint:
A sleek and savvy venue with class acts, a laid-back welcoming ambience and a highly appreciative audience. The star-studded line up includes legendary pianist Chucho Valdés, and the 10 CUC consumo mínimo is easy to satisfy, with inspired bartenders serving up punchy, price-conscious cocktails for 2 CUC. A top night for jazz lovers.

  • Address: Galerias del Paseo, Paseo, esquina a 1ra
  • Tel: 553475
  • 10 CUC consumo mínimo
  • Open: 11am-3am daily

Karl Marx Teatro

Better known as 'el Carlos Marx', this is Havana's largest theatre, with a seating capacity of almost 5,000. As tickets are still in pesos, this is where Cubans come to see big names such as Isaac Delgado, Silvio Rodr'guez and Los Van Van. Recently, Buena Vista Social Club held its first Cuban concert here. Tourist tickets are priced in dollars, but you can often pay in pesos

Kasalta Sport Café

Famous in the all the town; close to the tunnel which separates Miramar from El Vedado. The decoration is about sports, with many different objects, t-shirts, posters on the walls and videos on the televisions. They offer light food (not fast, because they are a little bit slow) at reasonable prices

Special and unique location of this cafe, in a long terrace at the very same building of the Capitolio. There is no big offer of drinks but it does not matter.

  • Address: Capitolio Nacional. Paseo Martí e/ San Martín y Dragones, La Habana Vieja

Rated as a top Havana nightspot, this open-air disco has two large dance floors for salsa, merengue and R&B and features a small floor show. It is very popular with Cubans and foreigners, so expect queues. Tuesday features Latin jazz and salsa with performances from local favourites Dan Den and NG La Banda. Thursday is carnival night.

Madriguera (La)

La Madriguera is the headquarters of the Asociación Hermanos Sa'z, the youth wing of the UNEAC (Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba). Its main aim is to provide institutional support for and promotion of young artistic talent, but it also organises concerts, exhibitions, conferences and festivals. La Madriguera is located in the beautiful park of La Quinta de los Molinos, where you'll find individual musicians and groups rehearsing at all times of the day. Stop by to find out about upcoming concerts or just hang out and listen to some great tunes. La Rockoteca disco is held here every Thursday (8pm to midnight).

Footprint:
Peso admission is variable, if anything. This wild, unruly park is furtive ground for the flourishing talents of the committed youth members of UNEAC. Cited as being “un lugar oculto para las ideas abiertas”, (a hidden place for open ideas), it offers arts, crafts and musical workshops for all ages and talents. Crossing the Cuban musical spectrum, there are impassioned musicals, including hip hop, rap, rumba and more traditional Cuban rhythms. Fascinating glimpse into Cuban youth culture.

  • Tel: 8798175
  • Open: 9am-7pm Mon-Wed, Fri, Sat; 9am-midnight Thur; closed Sun

Maison (La)

This tourist entertainment and shopping complex has a nightly show (10.15pm to 12.30pm) followed by an outdoor disco.

CanalCubano: This sumptuous residence is a cabaret, shop gallery, fashion footbridge, restaurant with swimming pool and a nice garden-coffee where to be seated during a day in Miramar, suburb that counts with several places where you can go to eat out but it has a few bars and cafeterias.

  • Address: Calle 16 #701, esquina a 7ma Tel: (7)241546
  • Open: 9.30pm-1am daily

  • Address: L'nea #657, entre A y B
  • Open: Box office 10am-5pm daily

Café Mercurio

It’s located under the building Lonja del comercio; it is very animated place during the day. At night is more quiet. It has a pretty terrace to enjoy with the view of the San Francisco church.

  • Address: Lamparilla nº 2 esq. Oficios, La Habana Vieja.
    Tel: (7)666188

El Mesón

This is the only bar in which to have a drink or eat something in the charming village of Santa María del Rosario. The bar is located in the main square, few metres from the church. Quite crowded.

  • Address: Pueblo de Santa María del Rosario

Mina (La)

La Mina has a restaurant and two cafés; waiters and bands are shared with Al Cappuccino next door. The patios, located on Plaza de Armas, are a great spot to relax and listen to live son until 11pm followed by boleros until the early hours. The downside is that they can be rather touristy, though.

CanalCubano: These two bustling terraces of the Armas square are very frequented at every hour. The place is enlivened by good groups of Cuban musicians.

  • Address: Calle Obispo #109, entre Oficios y Mercaderes Tel: (7)620216
  • Open: 24hrs daily

Mirador de la Bahía

Located on the flat roof of a building in Plaza de Armas, this establishment offers drinks, simple meals, live musical entertainment and wonderful views of the Havana Bay and the old part of the city. We recommend it.

  • Address: Plaza de Armas, Obispo, La Habana Vieja

Bar Mirador de Bello Monte

Terrace-Bar situated on top of a small hill from where you will enjoy unbelievable panoramic views over Guanabo and surroundings. Ideal if you are looking for privacy and quietness during a romantic and secret "tête-à-tête"... We trust in the fact that your better half did not have the same idea!.

  • Address: Vía Blanca, Guanabo. La Habana

Monserrate Bar

The Monserrate has the kind of cheap, but not so cheerful food that seems a great answer to those one o'clock in the morning hunger pangs. Otherwise, just enjoy the beer (1CUC) and the cocktails (2.50CUC), the resident band and the other tourists. This place is lively, and the service is always terrific – until they rip you off. Watch your change – they'd do your granny off here.

  • Address: Avenida de Bélgica (Monserrate), esquina a Obrapía (no phone)

Museo del Ron

Many of the bars recently opened in Old Havana are nicely decorated, but with some light imperfections. This place is an exception. A well distributed space and a decoration done with love for details, make the difference. In addition the service is good.

  • Address: San Pedro e/ Sol y Churruca, La Habana Vieja
