My wife and I spent 6 nights in Havana.
We stayed in downtown Havana in Casa Ludmila in the America building. Ludmila (an ophthalmologist) is a beautiful and sweet person that is more than happy to help you find your way around the city and its vicinities. Ludmila and her son, Vladimir Iglesias, speak fluent Spanish and Russian. She rents an air-conditioned room, with independent entrance, with private bathroom and a spacious lobby. The building is very secure. I would say that the accommodation is probably above Cuban standards, but you’ll still miss your home. This casa particular is at the intersection of two very busy streets, Neptuno and Galiano, and it is right on top of “casa de la musica”. If you like Salsa this is the place for you. I would not recommend it for light sleepers. It is a perfect place for people wanting to mingle with all Cuban. It is within walking distance of Chinatown, El Capitolio, Calle Obispo, El Malecon, Parque Central, El Foridita, artesanías (crafts) and paintings, etc, etc … Breakfast are not offered but there is a nice corner store on the ground floor where you can get anything from sandwiches to pizza for as little as 1 CUC. I paid 25CUC/day to stay here.

Hola- Reading the reviews reminds me of my stay in Cuba between 1994-1998, 3 weeks, every six months. I note that the reviewers from the USA and UK seem to be the pickiest. Get over it! It's not the Waldorf!!! Your "hosts" don't provide amenities because they can't afford to. If they are grumpy it's because you are sleeping in their beds so they can earn a living, while they cram into a relative's or neighbor's home. My advice: Take a bottle of lice spray with you, a suitcase full of toilet paper (not to be put in the toilet!), a bag of rice, cooking oil, two cans of canned chicken and two cans of tuna and some granola bars to get you through the tough times. Then spend your / day on some of the best food and music you will EVER eat and hear. Hasta un otra dia...Hola Ruben Aguero, te amo y tambien tu familia. Un dia yo regresso. BAILA! -Line |
