Cuba and Cigars | Rolling of Tobacco

The rolling of the pure cigar

A panoramic of the rolling room.

Tools used by the cigar roller.

The first thing carried out by the cigar roller is to prepare the binder and he makes it retiring the nerviation or vein that still has the leaf.

The leaf for binder whose task is to hold the filler, is placed on the rolling table and then keeps on the selection of the blending of the binder.

The filler that is the heart of the cigar, contains three different types of tobacco: light, strong and high; the light one, comes from the high part of the plant, it is the leaf that gives the strength to the flavor of the cigar; the dry one, is obtained from the center of the plant and it is the one that gives the aroma to the cigar; the high one is the leaf of the low part of the plant, and it gives the combustibility to the cigar. The mixture of those types of tobacco that is denominated blending constitutes the recipe of the tobacco teachers.

The cigar roller molds the filler: in cylindrical shape (folding the leaves as if they were a fan)

The control of the filler by the binder is a fundamental step, because its objective is to achieve consistency and shape of the cigar. The binder has, therefore, the purpose of maintaining united the filler, that is to say, to hold the internal leaves firmly, and other objectives of the binder are to propitiate a good combustibility and to contribute to the appropriate organoleptic characteristics of the smoke.

Subsequently, the cigar roller proceeds to the closing of the binder on the filler. For it, according to the longitude of the vitola he conforms the core of the cigar and then he cuts in the guillotine one of the ends.

The binder and the filler form the core (also called size or bunch). Later, the bunches are placed in lines of some 10 units on wooden molds of the size of the wanted final product.

The objective of molding is to press the cigar and to subject the leaves before beginning to place the wrapper; this is the most delicate operation in the whole process. The cigars are placed in some wooden molds where they remain about 15 minutes, enough time to achieve a semifinal good aspect.

To press the cigar is the following step: the molds are placed in a press that applies the necessary pressure so that the pure cigars acquire their shape. During the forty five minutes of the pressing process, the cigars are rotated regularly to create the wanted cylindrical contour.

The press is an entire symbol of the cigar rollers; the way of putting the boxes, the degree and time of pressure are part of the secrets of each teacher.

Then the cores are taken by the roller to the machine, in which is proven the circulation of air inside the cigar and this way to know if it will have appropriate quality to guarantee the good combustibility that should characterize the Habanos.
